Maldives travel guide: seasonal weather and marine life
The Maldives offers varying travel experiences depending on the season and specific atoll. The northeast monsoon, occurring from late in the year through spring, typically brings drier conditions and is considered the traditional time for sun-seeking travelers. Conversely, the southwest monsoon from May through October or November brings more rainfall but also unique opportunities for marine life encounters.
Marine life sightings are highly regional and seasonal. Baa Atoll, specifically Hanifaru Bay, is famous for manta ray aggregations during the southwest monsoon from June to November. South Ari Atoll is a notable location for whale shark encounters and sea turtles. Spinner dolphins are frequently spotted across various atolls, including North Malé, South Malé, Baa, and Vaavu, particularly during calm sea conditions.
