Maldon District Council accused of failing woman who died by suicide

The family of Debbie West, 57, has accused Maldon District Council and the NHS of failing to provide adequate support following a fire that left her homeless. West died on July 31 after taking an overdose at Sea End Country Park in Burnham.

Eight weeks prior to her death, a fire at Creeksea Place Caravan Park destroyed West's caravan and killed one of her cats, leaving her without belongings. Her daughters, including Zoe West, claim that despite West's vulnerability due to addiction, mental health struggles, and recovery from breast cancer, the council failed to provide suitable housing or mental health follow-up.

Zoe West stated that the council offered shared accommodation in Wickford, but the arrangement was unsuitable because it did not allow her mother to keep her remaining cat. The family alleges that West had made previous suicide attempts and that the council refused to communicate directly with her family despite being informed of her high level of vulnerability.
