Male testosterone levels may have declined by 54 percent

A meta-analysis presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) congress in London suggests a potential significant decline in male testosterone levels. Led by Israeli epidemiologist Prof. Hagai Levine, the study reviewed data from over 100,000 men between 1972 and 2019, indicating that average levels of total and free testosterone may have fallen by approximately 54 percent.

While these findings are currently presented as a congress summary and await full peer-reviewed publication, they have reignited discussions regarding male hormonal and reproductive health. Testosterone is critical not only for fertility and sexual function but also for maintaining muscle mass, bone density, red blood cell production, energy levels, and mood.

In a related context of reproductive health, experts note that infertility affects approximately 10 percent of the global population. While medical conditions, genetics, and age are factors, lifestyle choices play a significant role in sperm quality. Research suggests that dietary habits, such as following a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids, can support reproductive health, whereas diets high in ultra-processed foods and refined sugars may negatively impact sperm parameters.
