Mali and UNHCR seek to transition refugee aid toward economic autonomy

The Government of Mali and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) met in Bamako on September 14, 2026, to discuss the protection and assistance of refugees and internally displaced persons. The discussions focused on transitioning from emergency humanitarian aid toward sustainable solutions that promote economic autonomy and social inclusion.

UNHCR Regional Director for West Africa, Abdouraouf Gnon-Kondé, emphasized that refugee status should be a temporary situation rather than a permanent destiny. He urged the integration of refugees into national systems, specifically regarding vocational training, employment, and entrepreneurship, with a focus on women and youth.

The Malian government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening national protection mechanisms, including access to essential services, documentation, and social protection. A field mission to Timbuktu is scheduled to assess the living conditions of displaced populations and engage with local actors.
