Mali celebrates 66th independence anniversary

Mali is celebrating the 66th anniversary of its independence, sparking discussions regarding the national recognition of Modibo Keïta, the country’s first president and father of independence. While current President Assimi Goïta has included tributes to Keïta in independence addresses, some observers argue that the level of official recognition remains insufficient and call for him to be formally immortalized as a national hero.

In conjunction with the festivities, the NGO Women Leadership and Sustainable Development (AFLED) held a ceremony at the CICB focused on sovereignty, women's empowerment, and intergenerational dialogue. The event, presided over by the Minister for the Promotion of Women, Children, and the Family, Diarra Djénéba Sanogo, highlighted the essential role of women in economic and social development as a pillar for national peace and cohesion. The organizers emphasized that sovereignty must also be viewed through an economic lens, involving entrepreneurship and active participation in the national economy.
