Mali deepens diplomatic ties with Morocco and the United States in July 2026

From 21 to 24 July 2026, Bamako hosted the fourth session of the Mali‑Morocco Grand Mixed Commission of Cooperation. The high‑level meeting, co‑chaired by the foreign ministers of the two countries, featured an expert review, a business forum and a ministerial session aimed at renewing political and economic partnership. Participants sought to sign strategic agreements covering agriculture, trade, infrastructure, mining and security, and to promote private‑sector investments for sustainable development.

On 18 July 2026, Mali and the United States launched a strategic dialogue in Bamako focused on counter‑terrorism, energy transition and U.S. investment. U.S. senior official Nick Checker met with Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop and the U.S. ambassador to discuss cooperation against al‑Qaida and ISIS groups, logistical support for Malian forces, and opportunities for renewable‑energy projects amid acute fuel shortages. The talks reflect Mali’s shift toward new partners as relations with France weaken and the country joins the Alliance of Sahel States.

Both initiatives illustrate Mali’s effort to rebuild security cooperation and attract diversified economic partners amid a deteriorating Sahel security environment.
