Mali: Human Rights Watch reports abuses by military, Africa Corps, and militants
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has released a report documenting widespread human rights violations in Mali by both government forces and armed opposition groups. The report highlights that the Malian military and its Russian-controlled partner, Africa Corps, have killed and injured numerous civilians through apparently indiscriminate drone strikes and ground operations.
Specific incidents cited include a July 29 drone strike in the Kidal region that partially destroyed a health center, and an August 19 strike on a cattle market in Bandiagara that killed six civilians. Additionally, the report notes that five young girls were killed by Malian soldiers in the Segou region in July.
Conversely, HRW also documented atrocities committed by insurgent groups. The al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) reportedly attacked a military convoy in the Gao region on July 18, resulting in the torture and summary execution of at least 19 captured Malian soldiers.
Separately, recent violence in the Ménaka region has caused significant displacement and death. Reports indicate that militants affiliated with the Islamic State killed approximately 48 to 50 civilians in attacks on camps near Tinabow, targeting the Daoussahak community.
