AES nations condemn Nigerian President's comments on Sahel security

Diplomatic tensions have escalated between Nigeria and the Confederation of Sahel States (AES)—comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—following remarks made by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

During a meeting with traditional leaders on July 30, President Tinubu suggested that insecurity and kidnappings in Nigeria were exacerbated by the security collapse in neighboring Sahelian countries. In response, Burkinabe Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, acting on behalf of the AES, summoned the Nigerian chargé d'affaires in Ouagadougou to express "deep regret."

The AES leadership criticized the President's comments as "inaccurate," "simplistic," and "surprising," arguing that they minimize the sacrifices made by Sahelian forces in the fight against terrorism. The ministers emphasized that all four nations face a common enemy and called for solidarity rather than shifting responsibility between neighbors. The diplomatic friction highlights growing regional instability and differing perspectives on the management of cross-border terrorism.
