Mali restores fuel supplies in Bamako amid security threats

Fuel availability has returned to Bamako, Mali, following recent shortages, though the security of supply corridors remains a critical concern. The city's ability to function depends heavily on these imports, as Mali relies on external sources for 90% to 95% of its petroleum products, primarily through corridors from Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Mauritania, and Guinea.

To stabilize the supply, authorities have implemented measures including military escorts for convoys and accelerated customs procedures. On August 30, 2025, more than 900 escorted tankers were received in Bamako. This increased security follows threats from the JNIM, an Al-Qaeda-linked armed group, which announced a blockade on fuel imports and has targeted tanker trucks on strategic routes, such as the axis between Kayes and Bamako.
