Malibu coastal erosion threatens Sunset Restaurant and local roads

Severe coastal erosion near Zuma Beach in Malibu, California, has threatened the Sunset Restaurant and local infrastructure. Powerful waves have stripped away sand and undermined Westward Beach Road, leaving the roadway vulnerable to collapse and exposing a Los Angeles County water main.

In response to the damage, officials have closed Westward Beach Road to traffic and shut off water service in the immediate area to secure the exposed main. Emergency stabilization efforts are currently underway, with crews using large boulders to create a temporary barrier against the waves and prevent further undercutting of the roadbed.

The Sunset Restaurant, which is temporarily closed, sits near the affected area. Local residents have described the recent surf and shoreline changes as unprecedented. City maintenance and county contractors continue to monitor conditions to determine when the road can be safely reopened.
