Malibu sinkhole forces evacuations and closes beach access

Mandatory evacuation orders remain in effect for more than two dozen homes on Sea Level Drive in Malibu following a massive sinkhole caused by coastal erosion and heavy swells from Hurricane Marie. The sinkhole, which appeared near actor Nicholas Cage’s beachfront property, has compromised the roadway, preventing normal emergency access and ingress or egress for the neighborhood.

Local officials have issued red tag designations for 31 affected properties. Due to the damage, Southern California Gas Co. and the Waterworks District 29 have shut off gas and water services to prevent leaks and main breaks. The American Red Cross has established a temporary shelter at Malibu High School.

In addition to the residential impact, public access to Lechuza Beach has been closed indefinitely. While the beach itself was not heavily damaged, the sinkhole and road erosion have eliminated safe access points from the street. Authorities noted that while the beach could theoretically be reached by swimming from another location, there is currently no safe pedestrian access from the street level.
