Malick Mbaye appointed Director General of Customs
Malick Mbaye has been appointed as the new Director General of the General Directorate of Customs following a decree issued on September 21, 2026. He officially succeeded Babacar Mbaye during a handover ceremony held on October 1, 2026.
A career customs official, Mbaye joined the institution in 2002 after graduating from the National School of Administration (ENA). His extensive experience spans various sectors, including port and airport operations, international cooperation, intelligence, and investigations. He has also held specialized roles in the petroleum sector and the Directorate of Studies and Legislation.
Mbaye holds a master’s degree in Economic Analysis and Policies from Cheikh Anta Diop University. He is an accredited expert of the World Customs Organization (WCO) in the harmonized system and has contributed to the development of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (CET) and customs code reforms. While recognized for his technical expertise, some observers note that he has not directly managed territorial surveillance, a factor they suggest could be addressed by his choice of leadership team.
