Maliotenam begins construction of $29M health center

Construction has officially begun on a new $29 million health center in Maliotenam. The project aims to consolidate various services under one roof to better serve the growing community and improve service integration.

The new facility is designed to move away from the site of the former residential school building on Innut Street, which officials noted carries historical trauma. The new location on Apet Street will feature modern, functional spaces, including a dental clinic and dedicated areas for Innu youth protection services.

A significant aspect of the new center is the integration of traditional medicine, allowing community members to choose between nursing care and traditional practitioners. The project is partially funded by Indigenous Services Canada. Construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2028.
