Mali's General Assimi Goïta Marks Five Years of Transition, Shifts Focus to Development

On August 6, 2026, Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga delivered a comprehensive review marking the fifth anniversary of General Assimi Goïta’s assumption of power in Mali on June 7, 2021. The review highlighted security gains, a major re‑equipping of the Malian armed forces, and the recapture of large swathes of territory previously held by terrorist groups. It also noted the creation of the Sahel Confederation of States (AES) and a restructuring of the mining sector that recovered roughly 760 billion CFA francs in taxes and royalties for the treasury.

The government announced a new strategic phase focused on economic and social development. Priorities include expanding energy supply, accelerating industrialisation and local processing of raw materials, continuing large‑scale infrastructure projects, and strengthening education, health, and digital public services. The plan aims to boost youth employment, support entrepreneurship, and empower women, aligning with the Vision Mali Kura 2063 and the National Strategy for Emergence and Sustainable Development (SNEDD) 2024‑2033.
