Malkangiri forest officials seize 155 live turtles

The Odisha Forest Department has intercepted a wildlife smuggling attempt in the Malkangiri district, seizing 155 live Indian Flap-shelled turtles (Lissemys punctata). The reptiles were discovered inside a three-wheeler near Tamasa Village during a patrol.

Forest officials reported that the driver of the vehicle abandoned the transport and fled the scene upon seeing authorities. The vehicle has been seized, and a case has been registered. The Indian Flap-shelled Turtle is a protected species under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

An investigation is currently underway to identify the driver and determine the origin and intended destination of the turtles. This incident follows a similar crackdown in the same region on June 25, where approximately 300 turtles were intercepted.
