Malkerns expands infrastructure with new retail complex and supermarket

The Malkerns Parkview Retail Complex and a new Pick n Pay supermarket have officially opened, marking a significant infrastructure expansion in Malkerns. The development is part of a broader effort to transform the area into a lifestyle, residential, and commercial hub through the Malkerns Square vision.

Malkerns Town Council Mayor Sipho Shongwe stated that the growing infrastructure is essential for capturing tourism revenue. He noted that while the town is historically agricultural, its role as a destination for events like the MTN Bushfire Festival creates a demand for accommodation and retail services. Developing these facilities aims to prevent economic benefits from flowing outside the town borders.

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo described the project as a successful example of public-private partnership. He emphasized that while the government provides an enabling environment, private investors are critical for translating opportunities into jobs and tangible economic activity. The complex is intended to provide residents with easier access to essential services, including groceries, pharmacy, laundry, and dining.
