Malkerns Square expansion drives investment and jobs in Eswatini
The expansion of Malkerns Square in Eswatini, driven by an investment of nearly E1 billion from Select Limited Properties and Lojaf, is generating significant economic activity and employment. The development, which includes a shopping complex and an upmarket residential area, has reportedly created over 2,000 jobs.
African Alliance Chairman Sthofeni Ginindza announced plans to invest up to E5 billion over the next three years to further develop the region, including a boutique hotel and additional residential units. The project aims to expand economic opportunities beyond the Mbabane-Manzini corridor into rural areas.
Retailer Pick n Pay Eswatini is also benefiting from the expansion, with plans to support approximately 100 jobs this year through its larger store and produce market. The retailer is actively working to strengthen local agricultural value chains by prioritizing Eswatini-based suppliers for dairy and poultry to reduce reliance on South African imports, though beef quality remains a challenge for local sourcing.
