Malko Tarnovo celebrates Black Madonna feast in Bulgaria
On August 26, religious ceremonies were held in Malko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, to honor the feast of Our Lady of Częstochowa. The event took place at the sanctuary of the Patroness of Christian Unity, where a copy of the famous Black Madonna icon is venerated.
Bishop Petko Valov, chairman of the Bulgarian Bishops' Conference, presided over the Byzantine-Slavic liturgy. Archbishop Luciano Suriani, the Apostolic Nuncio to Bulgaria and North Macedonia, delivered the homily. During his address, Suriani commemorated the 25th anniversary of the coronation of the icon by Pope John Paul II during his 2002 visit to Bulgaria. He also noted the historical connection between Malko Tarnovo and Saint John XXIII, who visited the site during his diplomatic mission.
The icon in Malko Tarnovo, often referred to as the 'Wandering Mother of God,' has a complex history, having traveled from Lviv through the eastern Balkans and Turkey to reach its current location.
