Mall of America terror plot foiled by FBI arrest of 18-year-old

An 18-year-old man, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, has been arrested and federally charged for allegedly planning an ISIS-inspired mass shooting at the Mall of America in Minnesota. The suspect was taken into custody in Richfield on Tuesday after allegedly paying $600 to an undercover FBI employee for an AK-47-style rifle, four magazines, and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition.

Federal investigators had been monitoring Mohamud for nearly two years, beginning in December 2024. Court documents indicate that Mohamud expressed support for terrorist organizations, including ISIS, al-Shabaab, and al-Qaeda, and discussed his desire to achieve martyrdom. He allegedly targeted the Mall of America's Hmong Arts Celebration scheduled for October 24, noting that the event would have a large crowd.

Prosecutors allege that Mohamud expressed a desire to kill between 30 and 60 people and specifically mentioned targeting non-Muslims and Jewish people. U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen stated that the investigation allowed authorities to disrupt the threat before the defendant could carry out his intentions.
