Mallikarjun Kharge alleges caste discrimination after Haldwani rally purification ritual

A major political controversy has erupted in India following reports of a ‘shuddhikaran’ (purification) ritual performed at a stage in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. The ritual took place at Ramlila Maidan after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public rally on August 8.

Kharge, a Dalit leader, raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha, stating the act made him feel the “sting of untouchability” and was an insult to the Constitution. He alleged that individuals associated with the BJP carried out the ritual and demanded legal action under the Untouchability Act. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and various MPs, condemned the incident as an assault on constitutional values and a reflection of a discriminatory mindset.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami denied any involvement by the BJP, characterizing the incident as a protest by independent organizations over religious sentiments. He accused the Congress party of attempting to use a “Dalit angle” for political gain. Union Minister JP Nadda described the incident as unfortunate and assured that an investigation would be conducted, while maintaining that the BJP does not support such activities.
