INDIA bloc to hold virtual meeting over electoral roll allegations

Leaders of the INDIA opposition bloc are scheduled to hold a virtual meeting on Thursday evening to coordinate a strategy regarding alleged electoral irregularities. Chaired by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the meeting will focus on a roadmap for protests concerning the ‘vote chori’ (vote theft) campaign and preparations for a planned rally in New Delhi on November 1.

The opposition has raised concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that the process could lead to the unlawful deletion of eligible voters. They have also called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and the repeal of the 2023 law that grants immunity to election commissioners from civil and criminal proceedings.

While the opposition has taken its grievances to the Supreme Court and organized marches, the Election Commission of India has defended its procedures, maintaining that it follows established rules. Mallikarjun Kharge has also sought to discuss the SIR and the delimitation process directly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
