Mallorca altarpiece undergoes restoration after termite damage

The Name of Jesus altarpiece, a 400-year-old religious work located in the Sant Bartomeu de Montuïri church in Mallorca, is nearing the completion of a major restoration process. The artwork, dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, had reached a critical state of conservation due to decades of termite infestation that severely weakened its wooden structure. The damage was so significant that the chapel had to be protected with glass to prevent a potential collapse.

The restoration project is being carried out at the Bishopric of Mallorca Restoration Workshop with financial support from the Consell de Mallorca. The total investment for the project is 225,000 euros, implemented in several stages. Following preliminary studies in 2024 and an initial phase in 2025 involving the disassembly of parts and the restoration of the predella, altar, and base, the current phase focuses on the remaining architectural elements, polychrome panels, and carvings.

Once the intervention is complete, all pieces will be reassembled and returned to their original location in the church. The project also includes a technical report featuring graphic and photographic documentation of the entire restoration process.
