Mallorca celebrates Assumption of Mary with unique liturgical traditions

In Mallorca, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is marked by the unique tradition of ‘Thellit de la Verge’, or ‘the bed of the Virgin’. This ephemeral liturgical installation depicts Mary at rest before her bodily assumption into heaven, surrounded by candles and basil plants.

This year, 81 such installations are on display across the island, including 24 in Palma and 57 in the towns and villages of the Part Forana. The tradition dates back to the 14th century and represents the vigil over the Virgin before she is crowned as Queen. While the Assumption was defined as dogma by Pope Pius XII in 1950, these devotional practices predate that definition by many centuries.

A significant observance occurred on the evening of August 14 at the Cathedral of Mallorca, where the image of the ‘Mare de Déu Morta’ was carried in a solemn procession from the high altar to its traditional lit before the main portal.
