Mallorca celebrates Diada with honors for Michael Douglas and Rels B

In Mallorca, the Consell de Mallorca celebrated its Diada by honoring 27 individuals and entities with the 2026 Awards, Honors, and Distinctions. Notable recipients included musician Rels B as 'Fill Predilecte', singer Concha Buika as 'Filla Predilecta', and actor Michael Douglas as 'Fill Adoptiu'. Douglas was recognized for his four-decade connection to the island and his Regenera Deià ecosystem restoration project.

The festivities also marked the 750th anniversary of the death of Jaume I and the coronation of Jaume II, featuring a historical reenactment at the Santa Eulàlia church in Palma. The event commemorated the centenary of the musical version of 'La Balanguera', the island's anthem.

Simultaneously, Catalonia observed its National Day (Diada). While some perspectives highlight the historical significance of the date and the ongoing debate over national identity and independence, others note a trend of general demobilization in recent popular demonstrations. In various Catalan municipalities, such as Roses, the day was marked by traditional sardana dances and solidarity events, while commercial activity was adjusted according to local holiday regulations.
