Mallorca court sets 2028 trial date for German arson suspects

Eight men from Münster, Germany, known as the 'Kegelbrüder', are scheduled to stand trial in Palma de Mallorca from May 2 to May 15, 2028. The legal proceedings follow allegations of arson and bodily harm stemming from an incident in May 2022 at the 'Why not Mallorca' pub in Playa de Palma.

Prosecutors allege that the group threw burning cigarettes and liquids from their hotel balconies onto the establishment's thatched roof, triggering a fire. The incident reportedly resulted in three injuries and property damage estimated at nearly 130,000 euros. The Spanish prosecution is seeking seven years of imprisonment for each defendant, along with a collective demand for 100,000 euros in damages.

The defendants, who were part of a larger group of 13 vacationers at the time, maintain their innocence. The significant delay in the trial is attributed to an overloaded judicial system on the island of Mallorca.
