Spain deploys military to Mallorca for solar eclipse security
Spanish authorities have launched an extensive security and emergency operation across the Balearic Islands, particularly Mallorca, in anticipation of a total solar eclipse on August 12. The deployment aims to manage massive crowds of tourists and prevent chaos at popular viewing locations.
The Spanish Ministry of Defense is sending a tactical unit from the 'Palma 47' regiment to patrol the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains from August 10 to 14. This military presence, described by officials as a measure for surveillance and deterrence, will assist police and emergency services. Security measures include helicopter surveillance, increased maritime patrols with 70 specialists, and the establishment of checkpoints at key viewpoints.
To manage traffic, several roads, including the Ma-10 between Andratx and Pollença, will be closed to general traffic during peak hours, with access restricted to residents, public transport, and guests with confirmed reservations.
Additionally, a state of alarm has been declared due to high forest fire risks caused by dry vegetation and high temperatures. Authorities have deployed thousands of Civil Guard officers and forest firefighters across the archipelago to monitor the situation. The astronomical event is expected to generate significant economic activity, with estimates suggesting an influx of 421 million euros to the Spanish economy.
