Mallorca faces new coastal law sparking ecological protests over Es Trenc

The Balearic Islands government, led by President Marga Prohens, approved the first Integrated Coastal Management, Protection and Governance Law for the region. The draft measures include protection of traditional fishing structures, a speed limit of ten knots for large vessels and jet‑skis near the shore, greater involvement of local councils in coastal planning and the transfer of certain maritime‑land public domain procedures to municipalities.

Environmental groups GOB, Terraferida and the Menys Turisme platform have organized a human chain and other actions, warning that the law could weaken safeguards for the Es Trenc natural area. They argue that the recently passed “omnibus” law on strategic projects would allow the government to modify the existing protection regime for the beach by decree. The regional administration rejects the accusations, saying the legislation merely streamlines administrative processes and does not endanger the park.
