Mallorca ports face environmental objections and mooring shortages
The environmental group GOB has filed objections against a proposed expansion by the Club Náutico de Can Picafort in Mallorca. The project, managed by Ports de les Illes Balears (PortsIB), includes five floating pontoons, 79 moorings for light sailing vessels, and approximately 70 helical anchors to be placed on the seabed. GOB argues the expansion intensifies coastal occupation and questions the environmental guarantees, specifically regarding the impact of anchors on marine habitats and sediment resuspension.
Simultaneously, PortsIB is managing high demand for mooring spaces across Mallorca. Two major administrative procedures are currently underway to address the imbalance between supply and demand. One process involves renewing base authorizations for recreational vessels in Colònia de Sant Jordi, Es Barcarès, Pollença, S’Oberta, and Valldemossa. The second process concerns commercial moorings for rental, water activities, and passenger transport for the 2027 season. Current holders must apply by December 31 to maintain their preferential rights, or they risk losing their assigned spots.
