Mallorca prepares for August 2026 solar eclipse amid transport disputes

On 12 August 2026 a total solar eclipse will pass over the Balearic island of Mallorca, making it the last point in Spain to experience totality. Local authorities and tourism operators have organised visibility exercises and special packages that include guided boat trips, certified glasses and stays at rural hotels, promoting the event as a major draw for visitors.

At the same time, Mallorca’s taxi unions have warned that illegal VTC and unlicensed transport services are proliferating to meet the expected tourist surge. The associations cite fines ranging from €15,000 to €25,000 for vehicles operating without proper pre‑contractual authorisation and have called for stricter enforcement. Meanwhile, in Ecuador the eclipse will not be visible at all; NASA confirms that totality will be confined to parts of the northern hemisphere such as Greenland, Iceland, Spain and northern Russia, with only partial views elsewhere. Ecuadorian observers are instead encouraged to watch the Perseids meteor shower on the night of 12‑13 August.
