Mallorca proposes vehicle entry limits for 2027

Llorenç Galmés, president of the Consell de Mallorca, has presented a proposal to the European Commission to limit vehicle entry into Mallorca starting in 2027. The plan, presented to Mona Björklund, Director of Tourism at the Directorate-General for Mobility, aims to address unsustainable traffic levels on the island.

The proposed measures include restricting vehicle entry for non-residents, implementing a new tax, and setting a maximum limit on the number of rental cars in circulation. Galmés noted that in 2023, approximately 400,000 vehicles entered Mallorca through its ports, a 108% increase compared to 2017.

The initiative seeks to balance tourism flows with environmental and territorial sustainability. Björklund indicated that Mallorca’s model of responsible tourism could serve as an example of best practices in the European Commission’s upcoming tourism strategy.
