Mallorca protests over tourism trigger police violence allegations
Large demonstrations were held on Mallorca, the main island of the Balearic archipelago, organized by the platform Menys turisme, més vida to protest over‑tourism, unaffordable housing and perceived cultural erosion. Protesters marched peacefully through Palma and other towns.
Police forces responded with force, injuring around twenty participants and several journalists. The Human Rights Commission of the Balearic Bar Association declared the action an “illegitimate use of force” and called for an independent judicial investigation. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, after a visit to the royal palace in Palma, expressed “absolute support” for the government delegate Alfonso Rodríguez, who has faced calls for dismissal. The incident has intensified debate over tourism management and police accountability in the islands.
