Mallorca sees 10,000 join human chain to defend Es Trenc nature park

Around 10,000 people formed a 2–3 km human chain along Es Trenc beach, from the Club Náutico de sa Ràpita to Ses Covetes, in a mass protest on Sunday. The rally was organised by environmental groups GOB, Terraferida, Menys Turisme and Més Vida and was framed under the slogan “Es Trenc no se toca”.

Protesters denounced the recently approved “omnibus law” and related changes to the Balearic agrarian law, which they say allow the Consell de Govern to amend the park’s protection status by decree, bypassing parliamentary debate. The manifesto, read by writer Sebastià Alzamora, warned that the reforms constitute a “grave deregulating offensive” that threatens up to 80 % of Mallorca’s territory and could open the area to construction, chiringuitos, parking lots and other tourist infrastructure. The groups also highlighted that similar changes could affect other protected sites such as Cabrera, sa Dragonera and the Serra de Tramuntana.

Balearic government officials, including President Marga Prohens and Agriculture Councilor Joan Simonet, insisted the park remains protected and that the only real change is the administrative procedure for future modifications. Tensions rose when Campos mayor Francisca Porquer appeared and was met with boos. The demonstration was part of a broader “Mallorca al límit” campaign against perceived over‑tourism and speculative development.
