Mallorca storm causes fatality and widespread flooding

Severe storms and torrential rainfall have struck Mallorca, resulting in at least one fatality in Felanitx. An elderly woman, reported to be approximately 67 years old, died after being swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross a street. Initial investigations by the Guardia Civil suggest she may have slipped or tripped, subsequently becoming trapped under a parked vehicle in approximately 30 centimeters of water.

The weather event triggered more than 130 emergency responses across the island, involving fallen trees and widespread flooding in streets, basements, and commercial premises. An orange weather warning was issued for the Balearic Islands as authorities prepared for continued heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Logistical disruptions were significant, with 44 flights canceled at Palma airport due to the adverse conditions. The storm also led to the suspension of local festivities, such as the Cas Concos celebrations, as a safety precaution and a mark of respect for the deceased.
