Mallorca tourism faces summer slump amid rising costs

The tourism sector in Mallorca is experiencing a significant downturn during the peak summer months of July and August. Industry reports indicate that between 20% and 25% of the yacht rental fleet remained idle in ports due to a lack of customers, following a strong start to the season in June.

Several factors are contributing to this decline. Increased costs for flights and accommodations have left tourists with smaller discretionary budgets, leading to more frugal spending habits. Industry representatives note that while demand from the US and Argentina has increased, it is insufficient to offset the drop in visitors from traditional European markets such as Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Additionally, Mallorca faces intense competition from other Mediterranean destinations. For instance, yacht rental costs in Croatia can be approximately half of those in the Balearic Islands. The transport sector is also feeling the impact, with local bus companies reporting a sharp drop in bookings, leaving many excursion vehicles unused during the high season.
