Mallorca wineries face record early grape harvests due to heat
Wineries in Mallorca are experiencing their earliest grape harvests in recent years due to successive heatwaves and high temperatures. Some vineyards, such as Bodegas Ribas and Vi de la Terra Mallorca, began harvesting as early as July 21, 2026. This represents a significant shift from a decade ago, when white varieties typically began harvesting in mid-August.
Producers note that the reduced thermal difference between day and night is accelerating grape maturation. While some estates, including Bodegas José L. Ferrer, anticipate lower overall volumes in kilograms, there are high expectations for enological quality, with the fruit showing good balance and concentration.
Market trends are also influencing timing; there is a growing demand for lighter, lower-alcohol wines. Some producers are researching specific processes to achieve lower alcohol content and higher acidity, which are more easily managed through earlier harvests.
