Malmesbury teen found fit to stand trial in child exploitation case
A 16-year-old teenager from Malmesbury, South Africa, has been found fit to stand trial following a 30-day psychiatric assessment at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital. The teenager faces 15 charges related to the accessing, possession, facilitation, and downloading of child sexual abuse material.
The investigation, which involved the South African Police Service, the FBI, the United States Embassy, and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, suggests the accused is linked to an international child exploitation ring known as the ‘764’ network. Initial analysis of electronic devices allegedly uncovered images and videos of child abuse and animal mutilation.
Prosecutors believe the individual did not act alone. The matter has been postponed to 15 October for a bail application.
