Malnutrition in hospitals is frequently overlooked

A study published in ‘Deutsches Ärzteblatt International’ suggests that malnutrition in hospitals is frequently overlooked. While health insurance data shows malnutrition is recorded for only about 1 in 100 patients, researchers believe the actual figure is significantly higher.

Previous non-representative studies involving 1,755 patients across 40 clinics found that 33.9 percent were moderately or severely malnourished. This discrepancy indicates that many cases are likely not being identified or documented during routine clinical care. Undiagnosed malnutrition can lead to more severe disease progression, though early intervention could provide significant benefits to affected patients.
