Malo Središte village faces depopulation crisis

The village of Malo Središte, located on the Vršac hill in Serbia, is facing a significant demographic crisis. Despite its rich history dating back to the 15th century when the Središte Monastery was founded by Despot Jovan Branković, the settlement is struggling to survive due to a dwindling population.

According to Miroslav Vijatov, president of the Local Community Council, the village is currently home to approximately 60 residents, with only three individuals under the age of 18. The lack of infrastructure is evident, as the village no longer has a shop, and medical professionals and postal workers visit only once a week.

While the village experiences a temporary influx of people during weekends when believers visit the monastery, the long-term outlook remains difficult. Interestingly, despite the depopulation, real estate prices in the area have risen significantly, with some houses being listed for prices exceeding 180,000 and even 300,000 euros.
