Malpaís de Güímar implements restrictions for El Socorro pilgrimage

Authorities have implemented restrictions and maintenance measures in the Malpaís de Güímar Special Natural Reserve ahead of the Romería de El Socorro pilgrimage. To protect the sensitive volcanic landscape from erosion, access to Montaña Grande remains prohibited for climbing and descending during the event.

Local officials noted that the practice of running down the volcanic slopes, which became popular in the 1960s and 1970s, causes significant damage by creating gullies, accelerating soil loss, and harming vegetation. The prohibition is supported by the reserve's 2005 management plan.

In preparation for the expected high turnout, maintenance crews have repaired trails by filling holes, leveling surfaces, and restoring stone margins. Authorities have also cleaned the area and updated signage. Participants are urged to stay on authorized paths, wear closed technical footwear, carry sufficient water, and ensure all waste is removed from the protected area.
