Malpensa Airport renamed after Silvio Berlusconi

Milan's Malpensa Airport has been officially renamed ‘Aeroporto Milano-Malpensa Silvio Berlusconi’ following a decision by the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) and the Ministry of Transport. A formal ceremony was held attended by high-ranking officials, including Senate President Ignazio La Russa and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, as well as members of the Berlusconi family.

The renaming has sparked significant political debate and legal challenges. Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala and various political groups opposed the decision, leading to judicial proceedings. While a regional court recently upheld the legitimacy of the name change, the Green group Europa Verde has criticized the process, alleging that the airport's management company, SEA, was excluded from the decision-making process.

Despite the political controversy surrounding the late former Prime Minister's legacy, aviation experts note that the change is administrative and will not affect flight operations or international airport codes (MXP/LIMC). The operator, SEA, will begin updating signage and digital systems to reflect the new name.
