Milano Malpensa Airport renamed after Silvio Berlusconi

Milano Malpensa Airport has been officially renamed ‘Milano Malpensa Silvio Berlusconi’ following a ceremony at Terminal 1 on September 25, 2026. The event was attended by high-ranking Italian officials, including Senate President Ignazio La Russa, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and Lombardy Governor Attilio Fontana.

Family members, including Marina Berlusconi and Paolo Berlusconi, expressed pride in the tribute to the late former Prime Minister. Marina Berlusconi described the airport as a ‘bridge to the world’ that reflects her father’s vision. While the official name has changed, the IATA code ‘MXP’ and existing road signage will remain unchanged for travelers.

The renaming follows years of legal and political disputes. Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala declined to attend the ceremony, stating his opposition was based on political grounds and that he wished to remain consistent with his previous legal challenges against the decision. Additionally, a proposal to name a street in Portofino after Berlusconi remains pending.
