Malpensa Airport to hold ceremony honoring Silvio Berlusconi
Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini has announced that a ceremony will take place at Malpensa Airport on September 25 to honor the late former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
The decision to rename the airport follows an approval by the Enac board of directors on July 5, 2024. While the airport is already officially designated in Berlusconi's name, the upcoming event is described by Salvini as another dedication to the former leader.
The renaming process faced legal challenges from the Municipality of Milan and several municipalities in the Varese area, including Cardano al Campo, Samarate, and Somma Lombardo. However, the Lombardy TAR (Regional Administrative Court) rejected these appeals in April, ruling that the designation is primarily symbolic and honorary and that state-owned airport infrastructure is not subject to standard municipal toponomy rules.
