Malta businesses oppose childcare and budget measures for foreign workers
Various Maltese business organizations and hospitality establishments are calling on the government to reconsider Budget 2027 measures that would withdraw free childcare from third-country nationals (TCNs) who lack long-term residence status.
The Malta Chamber of SMEs and the Childcare Centres Providers Association (CCPA) warned that approximately one-quarter of children in childcare centers are TCNs. They argued the decision was made without sufficient consultation and could lead to increased costs for employers or a loss of workers if parents cannot afford alternative care.
In the hospitality sector, restaurants such as Yiamas Greek Tavern and POSH Turkish have expressed opposition to the new measures. These businesses stated that foreign workers contribute to the economy and pay taxes, arguing that the policy places unfair financial burdens on individuals based on their nationality or residency status.
