Malta calls for international protection of children in armed conflicts
Malta has issued an urgent appeal for enhanced international protection of children caught in armed conflicts. During a United Nations meeting in New York, Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Fearne reported that 14,200 children were killed in wars and conflicts in 2025.
Minister Fearne, a former pediatric surgeon, shared a personal account of operating on a young girl injured by a rocket-propelled grenade to illustrate the human cost of warfare. He urged the international community to sign a political declaration regarding the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.
Separately, Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing the suffering of civilians and children as unbearable due to shortages of food and water. Abela reaffirmed Malta’s commitment to a negotiated two-state solution and expressed support for the Gaza Peace Plan as a pathway toward political progress.
