Malta commemorates Daphne Caruana Galizia assassination anniversary

Activists and journalists gathered in Valletta, Malta, to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed by a car bomb on October 16, 2017.

The commemorative event included a vigil and a seminar focused on the current state of press freedom and the protection of activists facing threats and pressure globally. Anna Myers, Executive Director of the Whistleblowing International Network, presented a report on the conditions of journalists and activists, emphasizing the need for synergistic actions such as civil information, legislative support for victims, and comprehensive data collection on threats.

Representatives from the anti-mafia organization Libera participated, noting that the murder has not silenced those seeking justice and responsibility. The seminar, organized by Repubblika in collaboration with several organizations including Libera and the Centre for the Study of Democracy, highlighted the importance of public funding to support the protection of reporters and activists.
