Malta detains 15-year-old suspected of links to global abuse network
A 15-year-old Italian boy is being held in a juvenile detention facility in Malta under suspicion of links to '764', an international online network associated with child exploitation, blackmail, and the grooming of minors.
Investigators reportedly discovered videos on the teenager's electronic devices that suggested connections to the decentralized community. Europol has raised concerns regarding the 764 network, describing it as a group involved in cyber extortion, extremist content, and the coercion of vulnerable young people. Due to potential risks to other detainees, authorities have kept the minor in isolation.
The teenager's parents have criticized his treatment, claiming he has been “treated like a terrorist” and held in extended isolation. While the parents are not contesting the charges, they are challenging the conditions of his custody. The Maltese Home Affairs Ministry maintains that the restrictions are necessary and proportionate, noting that his routine has recently been expanded to include supervised group sessions and recreational activities.
The case has drawn attention to the role of digital platforms like Roblox in the lives of adolescents and the risks posed by online environments where relationships are built and exploited.
