Malta education system faces scrutiny over PISA scores and resource shortages
Opposition leader Alex Borg has issued a warning regarding Malta’s declining performance in the latest PISA international assessment, which evaluates the reading, mathematics, and science skills of 15-year-olds. Borg suggested the results should serve as a wake-up call for the national education system.
In addition to academic performance, education spokesperson Jerome Caruana Cilia highlighted logistical concerns raised by parents and educators ahead of the new school year. These include shortages of Learning Support Educators (LSE), a lack of assistant heads, and missing books and workbooks. Caruana Cilia proposed a national conference on education to establish a clearer strategic direction for the country’s schools.
