Malta faces infrastructure and sustainability challenges

Malta is grappling with significant pressures stemming from traffic congestion, tourism growth, and infrastructure limitations. To address chronic traffic and flooding, architect Nick Vella Muskat has proposed ‘A Second Malta’, a concept involving an underground network for electric buses, logistics, and water storage to alleviate surface-level congestion.

While the Bank of Valletta (BOV) reports that traffic has not directly disrupted its operational performance, CEO Kenneth Farrugia noted that long commutes impact employee work-life balance. The bank utilizes hybrid working models to mitigate these commuting difficulties.

Simultaneously, experts at the ‘A Liveable Malta’ conference raised concerns regarding the sustainability of the nation's tourism-driven economic model. While tourism generated approximately €4 billion in expenditure following a year with four million visitors, activists and academics warned that the sector's expansion is straining housing affordability, public infrastructure, and the overall quality of life for residents.
