Malta gaming industry shows economic growth and regulatory evolution
Malta’s gaming sector continues to expand its economic footprint, generating approximately €1.42 billion in gross value added in 2025, an increase from €1.32 billion in 2023. While the number of licensed companies has decreased, the industry's overall contribution to the economy has grown through diversification into esports, video game development, and supporting technology businesses.
To maintain competitiveness and clarity, new VAT and gaming tax arrangements are set to take effect in October 2026. These changes aim to provide a simplified tax structure and greater predictability for businesses.
Regulatory oversight remains a central pillar of the industry. The Malta Gaming Authority has identified key priorities for 2026, including increased scrutiny of crypto assets, cash transactions, sports betting integrity, and player protection measures.
