Malta jurors' WhatsApp messages spark controversy over Fenech acquittal

Police investigations in Malta have uncovered WhatsApp messages exchanged between jurors who acquitted Yorgen Fenech of involvement in the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The messages were sent in a group titled ‘Il-linja tal-verità’ (The Line of Truth), created two days after the September 2 verdict.

One juror reportedly wrote, ‘not even her children mourn her,’ a comment made hours before mass protests in Valletta. Other messages included ridicule of murder middleman Melvin Theuma’s religious expressions. These communications, along with past social media activity from jurors, may be used by the prosecution to seek a retrial.

Investigations followed the arrest of four jurors. Evidence includes a juror’s 2013 post criticizing police protection for Caruana Galizia and a 2021 post opposing compensation for her family. Civil society group Repubblika has called for accountability, describing the comments as part of a ‘campaign of hatred’ against the journalist and announcing a protest for October 16 to mark nine years since her death.
